Fishing report Puerto Escondido April 2019

April 2019 was a difficult month for Ruben and myself: we both simply had no time to fish. The 2 weeks of Easter holidays, a difficult customer in Casita Blanquis which we had to “throw out”, a new car for Ruben,…. enough on our mind.

shimano Tiralejos

I went in search of a big pargo from the beach with my Shimano Tiralejos, Daiwa BG 5000, braided 50lb and a stickbait. A strip of 8 km fished on foot (El Puertecito to Agua Blanca) gave a total of 1 hard bite. The fish went of the hook after a few seconds and left me with the brand new scratched stickbait. It is probably a month too early because “pargoland” as we call it also offers beautiful cuttings from the beach and in May I will have a second attempt.

Jack crevalleThe few times that Ruben fished from the beach were good for some Jacks. We now have to wait for  the first rain and the opening of the lagoons to search for the rooster from the beach. With the boat, yellowfin tuna – sailfish and striped marlin are caught, so the 2019 season starts great!

Fishing report February 2019, Puerto Escondido Oaxaca

valentijn roosterAs agreed the fishing report of the past month. February was reasonable good with even a few outliers such as a rooster  from the beach in February by my buddy Ruben. The Rubylures are a fixed value in our tackle box, actually we are currently not fishing with any other lure. It casts  like a spear and you even catch a rooster in the winter with this kure, that should not be more. A negative “outlier” than: the lagoon of Manialtepec. Very tough at the moment, never was that bad in the past. The water is crystal clear, we get fake hits of nice snook but we do not manage to hook a fish. Even with the fly rod and with a reputable English guide nothing but misses, hopefully there will soon be improvement. Images say more than words so a short video about the beach, lagoon and kayak fishing can be found in this page. Levi from SurfandFishing Charters had satisfied biggame customers but also inshore he managed to find beautiful fish. His short films can be found here on his Facebook page, now the video fragments of the past month, probably in the future a 2-weekly fish report will br posted;  we try to bring better quality but active fishing and at the same time shooting videos and / or photos  requires exercise.

There is also more “pressure” on the C & R ( still a hot topic here), but improvement among the anglers is noticeable. The “professional” (poachers) on the other hand are still enjoying themselves, A closed group which even are threatening profesional fishing guides; I am not allowed to interfere with this because all that protected poaching has political ties and a foreigner can be expelled if he is involved in political struggles. Just today I received a good news item: Illegal net fishing tackled by CONAPESCA

Ruben and I also eat fish, but  taking a fish for your own consumption or killing hundreds of baby roosters with illegal nets to sell at dump prices makes a big difference. I now hope that CONAPESCA will continue on its own and make a clean ship.

Fishing report Puerto Escondido January 2019

capi GeorgieAs promised from now on at the end of every month an overview of the beach and inshore catches in and around Puerto Escondido.

Beach fishing is limited to a few hours a week for me, January is a quiet month in Puertecito for catches from the beach. Cold currents cool down the beach water to approx. 20 ° C. and you have to be really lucky to see some activity. The big schools of jacks, sierra, … are now a few miles from the shore and can only be reached via a boat. One big exception: the beach around La Punta /Zicatela. Buddy Ruben catches early in the morning some nice fish there  , not only from the beach but also with his Ocean kayak.

I was invited for a morning boat fishing with a neighbor and good friend Mark and his wife Nikki. A morning never to be forgotten, my eldest son Jaffet has even caught the heaviest wahoo I have ever seen in this region. I was captain of the day but could also catch my first wahoo.

Mark's wahoo

These wahoos are beautiful and superfast predatory fish, they are only around in January / February. The catch location: a huge boulder on a 10 minute boat ride from Puerto Escondido. Upon arrival at that underwater rock the fish were clearly visible on the depth gauge, after a few meters of trolling the first “barriletes con dienes” were caught, alternating with (small) dorado and ….. wahoo. The party continued until the current fell out.My first wahoo
Everything was neatly put back except the wahoos and some nice barriletes con dientes. These skipjacks with teeth are in contrast with the more common toothless skipjack very tasty and are eaten raw like the tuna with soya and wasabi sauce, accompanied by tomatoes and cucumber. 1 wahoo will be eaten by ourselves and “the crew” tomorrow, the other 2 went to 2 poor families together with some skipjacks.

A compliment for Levi from SurfandFishing Charters, I now know how hard it is to steer and position a 29ft. panga with a 250 hp bb engine and Levi does it time after time right down to the meter.

Some videos of Ruben and myself from last month can be found below as well as the facebook page of Levi. Watch and enjoy!

Casita Blanquis : de eerste “review”

Casita Blanquis
Exif_JPEG_420

Casita Blanquis
ready for Casita Blanquis II

Casita Blanquis I
