Fishing report August 2019, Puerto Escondido.

Due to a lack of rain a lot of lagoons closed again and the roosters stay out of reach for the moment. Some  surf spinning days were really good around high tide and all in all Ruben and I had fun.  I tried to find the fish really close in  the rocks with the Texas rig, Ruben (who lives 30 km. more to the north) only used his Rubylures casting jig. Both of us had a mix of good and bad days but we really can’t complain. I changed my strategy and I try to catch a fish in the morning around high tide in my backyard, Ruben starts at daybreak.  I’m still on the hunt for a good sized rooster but close to home now at walking distance.  Unfortunately it’s too dry for the time of the year but some rain is on his way and it only can get better.

Some more info about  the RUBYLURES can be found here.

I had a nice surprise 2 weeks ago : in a big tide pool a snook (robalo) couldn’t resist my softbait, the 8 pounder gave a nice fight and was landed after some “sweaty” moments. This snook ended up in our kitchen and was prepared bij chef José.  Delicious !!!

Fishing report Puerto escondido July 2019

July brought the usual swells (big waves) but half July  it became a bit calmer with less wind and some fish close to the shoreline

Also the Manialtepec lagoon revived and some nice snook (robalo) and a lot of catfish was caught  on Rapala like 5 cm. lures .

Jack crevalle on the T-rigWith the Texas rig I could catch some nice jacks and a few snappers. Not the big boys but nice fish, good sport on the light Xzoga seabass  rod. Also the Rubylures  did their job.  Still no rooster for me but the hunt continues.  The new Sharky lure does his moves and some day a big boy will snap it for sure.

Rare catch this month : a big wahoo with Levi (SurfandFishing Charters) . Wahoo loves “cold” water and not the 30° C temperature we have now but exceptions or surprises are always possible. Enjoy the short video

Things to do in Puerto Escondido : fishing

Sharky surface lure From time to time I’ll post something about the “things to do in Puerto Escondido” . As my favorite hobby has everything to do with fishing the “Mexicoast” in all his ways (big game, Little big game, beach, kayak, lagoon, river,…) my first article will of course tackle this topic.

Diederik zijn eerste roosterThe man i want to put in the spotlight today is my good friend and excellent Captain Levi from SurfandFishing Charters. Since 2014 till today Levi is my favorite capi and all my friends who love the fishing in the Pacific Ocean around Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca are really very satisfied with his service.  Levi started as a deckhand with his dad, combined afterwards the commercial with the sport fishing/guiding and is now since last year fully engaged in the guiding.roosterfish Clients still can keep a part of the catch if wanted but most of the fish (rooster – pargo – billfish) is normally always released.  Levi is for me the only local Captain who is really concerned about taking care of nature in all his aspects, he also can take you for a dolphin – whale or snorkel trip if wanted.

After al these years, Casa Blanquis is proud to have a man on board like Levi, we are also proud that we can say we never, never earned 1 peso on Levi’s work.

So, if interested in booking Levi feel free to send him a message through Facebook or send him a whatsapp (+52 1 954 100 9263) for more info and enjoy the beauty of the Mexicoast around Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

You also can book Levi through this website    but keep in mind that it’s cheaper to contact Levi directly.

Fishing report Puerto Escondido April 2019

April 2019 was a difficult month for Ruben and myself: we both simply had no time to fish. The 2 weeks of Easter holidays, a difficult customer in Casita Blanquis which we had to “throw out”, a new car for Ruben,…. enough on our mind.

shimano Tiralejos
Exif_JPEG_420

I went in search of a big pargo from the beach with my Shimano Tiralejos, Daiwa BG 5000, braided 50lb and a stickbait. A strip of 8 km fished on foot (El Puertecito to Agua Blanca) gave a total of 1 hard bite. The fish went of the hook after a few seconds and left me with the brand new scratched stickbait. It is probably a month too early because “pargoland” as we call it also offers beautiful cuttings from the beach and in May I will have a second attempt.

Jack crevalleThe few times that Ruben fished from the beach were good for some Jacks. We now have to wait for  the first rain and the opening of the lagoons to search for the rooster from the beach. With the boat, yellowfin tuna – sailfish and striped marlin are caught, so the 2019 season starts great!

Fishing report March 2019

Sierra Madre
Sierra Madre

In spite a lack of time I still had some nice fishing days. It was tough during the visit of Tony Politi, who just spent his vacation here the wrong week, but Levi managed to find a school (hard to seduce) of yellowfin tuna. Fantastic sport with the light popper, a lot of misses, but still about 10 of those torpedoes saw the inside of the boat. We kept 3 and it was delicious yummy sashimi the next day. At the 2nd. half boat fishing day the pargo (cubera snapper) was first sought, but besides a few followers it remained silent.

Barracuda
Barracuda

I got a hard hit from a beautiful barracuda and that was it. No more tuna found on the way back but we  enjoyed the beautiful sea and the passing landscape.

Together with Tony we made an early trip to the Sierra Madre, impressive views of a lookout point on top of hill peak. Indescribably beautiful and worth repeating. Unfortunately we did not spot any birds, they were there but our untrained eye could not locate them.

Again the Rubylures turned out to be real catchers during the beach fishing, the Skippy will do it once the roosters are back  and if all goes well both lures will be available for sale in the course of this year via a new webshop but more about that later.

Fishing report February 2019, Puerto Escondido Oaxaca

valentijn roosterAs agreed the fishing report of the past month. February was reasonable good with even a few outliers such as a rooster  from the beach in February by my buddy Ruben. The Rubylures are a fixed value in our tackle box, actually we are currently not fishing with any other lure. It casts  like a spear and you even catch a rooster in the winter with this kure, that should not be more. A negative “outlier” than: the lagoon of Manialtepec. Very tough at the moment, never was that bad in the past. The water is crystal clear, we get fake hits of nice snook but we do not manage to hook a fish. Even with the fly rod and with a reputable English guide nothing but misses, hopefully there will soon be improvement. Images say more than words so a short video about the beach, lagoon and kayak fishing can be found in this page. Levi from SurfandFishing Charters had satisfied biggame customers but also inshore he managed to find beautiful fish. His short films can be found here on his Facebook page, now the video fragments of the past month, probably in the future a 2-weekly fish report will br posted;  we try to bring better quality but active fishing and at the same time shooting videos and / or photos  requires exercise.

There is also more “pressure” on the C & R ( still a hot topic here), but improvement among the anglers is noticeable. The “professional” (poachers) on the other hand are still enjoying themselves, A closed group which even are threatening profesional fishing guides; I am not allowed to interfere with this because all that protected poaching has political ties and a foreigner can be expelled if he is involved in political struggles. Just today I received a good news item: Illegal net fishing tackled by CONAPESCA

Ruben and I also eat fish, but  taking a fish for your own consumption or killing hundreds of baby roosters with illegal nets to sell at dump prices makes a big difference. I now hope that CONAPESCA will continue on its own and make a clean ship.

A Valentines rooster for buddy Ruben

valentijn roosterAfter a difficult, tough lagoon session and despite the bad tide (low tide), we still spent 2 hours for beach angling. Not for nothing because out of the blue fishmate Ruben caught a nice rooster Despite 1 defective Gopro still some footage:

Congratulations for your efforts buddy, the Rubylures did it again!
