Fishing report August 2019, Puerto Escondido.

Due to a lack of rain a lot of lagoons closed again and the roosters stay out of reach for the moment. Some  surf spinning days were really good around high tide and all in all Ruben and I had fun.  I tried to find the fish really close in  the rocks with the Texas rig, Ruben (who lives 30 km. more to the north) only used his Rubylures casting jig. Both of us had a mix of good and bad days but we really can’t complain. I changed my strategy and I try to catch a fish in the morning around high tide in my backyard, Ruben starts at daybreak.  I’m still on the hunt for a good sized rooster but close to home now at walking distance.  Unfortunately it’s too dry for the time of the year but some rain is on his way and it only can get better.

Some more info about  the RUBYLURES can be found here.

I had a nice surprise 2 weeks ago : in a big tide pool a snook (robalo) couldn’t resist my softbait, the 8 pounder gave a nice fight and was landed after some “sweaty” moments. This snook ended up in our kitchen and was prepared bij chef José.  Delicious !!!

Rubylures, you should have some in your tacklebox

Years ago I started making some surface lures, like the Sharky and plastic soft baits.  A few years ago I met Ruben who started making casting jigs which he called Rubylures.  Today Ruben and I only fish with our handmade lures/shads and the results are really good. Rubylures We make all our stuff by hand, work together and have a lot of fun catching fish with our handmade lures.  I also did some comparing tests in the past and I must say that price/quality/availability in Mexico only 1 brand has a spot in both our tackle boxes besides our handmate stuff : the excellent Stephen Janssen lures   which also do their job and sometimes make the difference.

Rubylures isn’t a commercial brand and we really don’t sell our handmade lures,  although to recover our costs (material/paint) we offer from time to time some items.  Just send us a message via whatsapp +52 1 954 159 0357 and we’ll see what we can do. The purpose for both of us is to fish and fish and fish and…….

Things to do in Puerto escondido : kayaking the Mexicoast

2 Ocean KayaksCasa Blanquis offers a new experience in AIRBNB: kayaking the Mexicoast in the quiet “winter months”. Ruben from Casa Kalani and I personally supervise this activity in and around the bay of El Puertecito. We have 2 Ocean kayaks, 1 KAM Kayak and 1 Herritage red fish 14 feet kayak. All 4 sit on top and unsinkable. Fishing equipment is brought by the customer but can also be rented on site if desired (except fly fishing equipment). Non-AIRBNB renters and clients of Casa Blanquis or Casa Kalani can of course also rent these kayaks, feel free to send a whatsapp to

Things to do in Puerto Escondido : Manialtepec lagoon

viajes el colibriIf you love nature, bird watching or cruise the tranquil waters of the Manialtepec Lagoon and spend an evening explore the glowing, bio-luminescent waters Casa Blanquis can recommend you a dedicated young man : Sulen Martinez from Viajes El Colibri (Chuki for friends). All my guests/friends were very happy with his guiding, for more info just give him a call or send a message to his cell phone.

We (Ruben and I) love the lagoon, it’s a peaceful environment and even when the fishing is bad we enjoy this little paradise every time.  Just scroll in my youtube video channel  to find some short (fishing) videos about Manialtepec lagoon. Enjoy !

Fishing report Puerto escondido July 2019

July brought the usual swells (big waves) but half July  it became a bit calmer with less wind and some fish close to the shoreline

Also the Manialtepec lagoon revived and some nice snook (robalo) and a lot of catfish was caught  on Rapala like 5 cm. lures .

Jack crevalle on the T-rigWith the Texas rig I could catch some nice jacks and a few snappers. Not the big boys but nice fish, good sport on the light Xzoga seabass  rod. Also the Rubylures  did their job.  Still no rooster for me but the hunt continues.  The new Sharky lure does his moves and some day a big boy will snap it for sure.

Rare catch this month : a big wahoo with Levi (SurfandFishing Charters) . Wahoo loves “cold” water and not the 30° C temperature we have now but exceptions or surprises are always possible. Enjoy the short video

Things to do in Puerto Escondido : fishing

Sharky surface lure From time to time I’ll post something about the “things to do in Puerto Escondido” . As my favorite hobby has everything to do with fishing the “Mexicoast” in all his ways (big game, Little big game, beach, kayak, lagoon, river,…) my first article will of course tackle this topic.

Diederik zijn eerste roosterThe man i want to put in the spotlight today is my good friend and excellent Captain Levi from SurfandFishing Charters. Since 2014 till today Levi is my favorite capi and all my friends who love the fishing in the Pacific Ocean around Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca are really very satisfied with his service.  Levi started as a deckhand with his dad, combined afterwards the commercial with the sport fishing/guiding and is now since last year fully engaged in the guiding.roosterfish Clients still can keep a part of the catch if wanted but most of the fish (rooster – pargo – billfish) is normally always released.  Levi is for me the only local Captain who is really concerned about taking care of nature in all his aspects, he also can take you for a dolphin – whale or snorkel trip if wanted.

After al these years, Casa Blanquis is proud to have a man on board like Levi, we are also proud that we can say we never, never earned 1 peso on Levi’s work.

So, if interested in booking Levi feel free to send him a message through Facebook or send him a whatsapp (+52 1 954 100 9263) for more info and enjoy the beauty of the Mexicoast around Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

You also can book Levi through this website    but keep in mind that it’s cheaper to contact Levi directly.

Casa Blanquis information about inshore and beach fishing

sharky
Sharky

When I moved to Puerto escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico in 2011, I had the basic equipment of 4 rods (2 Shimano Beastmasters of 3 m.  and 2 of 2.7 m.), 2 Shimano Stella SW 6000 and about 20 Ranger lures. Now, 8 years later, 1 Stella remains. The guided eyes of the 4 Beast Masters were all broken after less than a year. Apparently they were not able to withstand the heat released during the fight with a decent fish.

Dkippy
Skippy

I also don’t like the Ranger lures anymore and they have been replaced by the homemade Sharky. I have learned a lot in recent years and can imagine that for a sports fisherman who comes to fish for the first time to the Pacific coast of Mexico, finding the right (useful) equipment is a huge and expensive investment. That’s why all the visiting anglers from Casa Blanquis can use the necessary rods, reels and lures for both beach fishing and inshore boat fishing free of charge. Reimbursement is only required in the event of a break or loss of the fishing rod or lures. The big game fishing is done with top material from my regular and excellent captain/guide Levi from SurfandFishing Charters. Any breakage of that material should not be reimbursed.

Short overview of the available material:

The Sharky (derived from the Ice Kone), Skippy (modified model of the Flapper), stickbaits / pencil poppers and casting jigs from Rubylures are made by Ruben and myself. The great Killerpop, Ballyhoo and Cabokiller from Stephen Janssen are for sale at the local fishing store Halcon in Puerto Escondido.

Of course everybody can bring his own material but when staying at Casa Blanquis you save a lot on your budget by using the available top material for both the beach / inshore and big game fishing.  The next step now is jigging at depths up to 100 meters, in 2020 “work” will be made of this but for advice you can already contact Frans Oomen (f.oomen@online.nl) who was here in May 2018 fished (and caught) and returns in November 2020.

Another form of fishing that will normally also be tried out in the fall of 2020 is fly fishing in the lagoons and /or from the beach.
